These curriculum suggestions are designed to provide some ideas for developing a program for parents and other caregivers in a parental role who wish to learn how to protect teens from sexual coercion and violence in dating relationships. It is intended to be used in conjunction with the document Building an Effective Parent Education Program. Trainers can use and adapt any of these ideas in a way that suits the needs of their communities. They may wish to have a different number of sessions, or different topics for some of the sessions. Teaching Teens About Dating Violence
Health Program Approximately 10 percent of all high school students report experiencing physical dating violence in the previous 12 months, and approximately 10 percent report experiencing sexual dating violence in the previous 12 months, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention CDC. Unhealthy relationships during the teen years can disrupt normal development and contribute to other unhealthy behaviors in teens that can lead to problems over a lifetime.
Teens who experience dating violence are more likely to experience depression and anxiety, engage in unhealthy behaviors such as experimenting with tobacco, drugs and alcohol, and have thoughts about suicide, according to the CDC. The mental and physical health consequences can extend into adulthood, and unhealthy relationships in adolescence also can create a cycle of abusive relationships.

This curriculum is based on Safe Dates and Expect Respect, two evidence-based violence prevention curricula and also uses tools from the School of Unity and Liberation (SOUL) to help build students’ critical thinking skills.
This article has been cited by other articles in PMC. This study assessed the effects of the Safe Dates program on the primary and secondary prevention of adolescent dating violence. Fourteen schools were randomly allocated to treatment conditions. Treatment and control groups were comparable at baseline. In the full sample at follow-up, less psychological abuse, sexual violence, and violence perpetrated against the current dating partner were reported in treatment than in control schools.
In a subsample of adolescents reporting no dating violence at baseline a primary prevention subsample , there was less initiation of psychological abuse in treatment than in control schools. In a subsample of adolescents reporting dating violence at baseline a secondary prevention subsample , there was less psychological abuse and sexual violence perpetration reported at follow-up in treatment than in control schools.
Most program effects were explained by changes in dating violence norms, gender stereotyping, and awareness of services. This article analyzed the Safe Dates program youth violence prevention program participants at one year after the completion of the program. The Safe Dates program consists of a session curriculum, a play that is performed by the students, and a poster creation contest.
The authors found that the Safe Dates program may also decrease violence in other areas. It may be useful to those who work with youth to prevent violence. Program follow-up post-test data was collected after one month of program completion, and then again after one year, two year, three year, and four year follow-up points. For this study the one year data was analyzed. The study findings suggested that there was a stronger program effect on minority student participants, particularly young women of African American descent.
This study was also limited to participants who lived in a rural county and thus may not be generalizable to students who live in urban areas.
